Two times yesterday on two separate occasions, people told me that I had perfect handwriting.

I was sitting at work at the desk when Carolyn* looked at my notebook, opened it, and said, “Is that your normal handwriting?”  Another person agreed, saying that to write that nicely would take a lot of effort.  About 30 minutes later, I was in a meeting with one of my professors when I went to grab a pen and write something down.  She said she could type it up for me instead, but then said, “But with your impeccable handwriting, I don’t need to!  You’re the only student I’ve ever had who has had such wonderful handwriting.  Did you practice your penmanship?”  I then proceeded to say that I had always just been anal about how it looked, which was just an awkward choice of words.  (This is also ironic because the handwritten thing we had handed in that day in class was mostly just scribbles.  But perhaps she hadn’t looked at it yet.)

I find this so hilarious.  I love my handwriting, I really do.  I don’t intentionally write nicely.  Or at least I didn’t think I did until I thought back to a few years ago and how much my handwriting has actually improved.  I just love handwriting.  You can tell so much about a person, just by looking at what they’ve written.  And the uniqueness and varying styles of penmanship is incredible.

And then just tonight, I was sitting in the movie theatre working on my essay (there’s a story behind this, I promise) and Sarah told me how much she loved my handwriting.

Is it wrong to be proud of this?

*The funny thing about Carolyn is that her handwriting is the nicest handwriting I’ve ever seen.  Go figure.
